The Concept and Subsequent Benefits

"Research at the University of Maryland found that the same principles could be applied to the ageing population. In a study of men aged 50 - 69 years they demonstrated that strength gains of 44% were possible over a 16-week training programme."

We all know that taking regular exercise is important to stay fit and healthy. And while we may not enjoy being reminded of this, as we get older the need for exercise is actually greater. Circulatory problems, osteoporosis, joint seizure are all problems that we may have to face. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Independent research has shown that the sedentary lifestyle contributes more to the ageing process than any natural physiological deterioration.

Moreover, studies by NASA found that, in spite of an active daily routine, astronauts effectively aged years while in space. The weightlessness meant that it was virtually impossible to stress the body physically and this replicated an extreme form of sedentary lifestyle. Importantly, on returning to earth these effects could be reversed over a very short period of time by intense exercise.

Research at the University of Maryland found that the same principles could be applied to the ageing population. In a study of men aged 50 - 69 years they demonstrated that strength gains of 44% were possible over a 16-week training programme.

In a year-long study carried out at the Harvard Medical School, women with an average age of 59 achieved staggeringly high increases in strength of around 70%.

Other research shows that taking regular exercise that just increases the heart rate and puts the body under slightly more stress than the activities for daily living can reduce the physiological age of your body.

With improved circulation, you hair and skin will get a lift, often appetite and sleep patterns improve. And of course it is a great way to control weight - either taking it off or adding it on in some cases. Often it is not the weight that is the problem, but the tone.

What's more exercise isn't just good for the body, it's also great for the mind. It improves concentration, helps you deal with stress better and gives your confidence a kick-start.

So we set out to design an exercise programme that would meet our physical needs, but in safety and in comfort.
