"What ageX is not about, is the old fashioned 'no pain, no gain' philosophy. That was always a dodgy premise, given that pain is the body's defence mechanism. So pain is a no-no in our workouts."
From a background of working with people across the spectrum of fitness, from elite professional sports people to the chronically disabled, we are able to design bespoke health and fitness programmes.
So we set up three pilot programmes in different towns in England. Ads in local papers got men and women of mature years into our sessions. Using simple low-impact circuit training, without any bulky equipment, we were able to measurably improve strength, flexibility and stamina for all those who came regularly.
Some of our people, who were understandably a little hesitant at first, found they enjoyed themselves so much that we were running three or four sessions a week to cope with demand.
Of course there were different levels of fitness. Some were actively sporty types, others garden a bit or walk the dog, and there were those who frankly didn't do any real exercise.
But with our experience it is possible to use the same programme for a wide range of conditions. Sure some people may start by doing the exercises at half speed, until they feel fitter. Equally others may do the same routines but using ankle and wrist weights for added resistance.
The net result is the ageX programme - fitness for grown-ups - a group session, but with very individual attention that helps you to achieve your personal health and fitness goals.
What ageX is not about, is the old fashioned 'no pain, no gain' philosophy. That was always a dodgy premise, given that pain is the body's defence mechanism. So pain is a no-no in our workouts.
And we are not trying to build our guys into Arnold Schwartzeneggers or our girls into - well libel laws prevent names, so let's just say - "Amazons".
We will ask you to push yourself, but within your limits, not those of some young Turk with muscles between the ears. We work with you on an individual basis to decide your current fitness level and help to identify a set of realistic goals for you to achieve.
You can expect to increase your flexibility and suppleness, improve your general fitness and strength and build stamina. What for? To continue to get the most out of life, for as long as possible. Self-indulgent? Possibly. Hard work? Sometimes. Fun? More often than not. Sociable? You bet.
